For more than 20 years, Cristo Rey has dedicated itself to the mission of providing a dual-language, college preparatory education and professional work experience to exclusively Spanish-speaking families with limited financial means from across Chicago’s Southwest Side. Through our pioneering Corporate Work Study Program, students pay for most of their own education by working at businesses and nonprofit agencies across the greater Chicago area. This innovative approach also provides our students with valuable work experience and the opportunity to grow in maturity, self-esteem, and confidence. For the past four years, the amount families are asked to contribute each year has remained at $2,950, with approximately 90% of families receiving additional assistance for that cost. Yet, for the last decade, 100% of graduates have gained acceptance into at least one college or university.
The Cristo Rey Athletic Program provides a critical role in building the life skills our students need to persevere and succeed in college and beyond. In addition to physical education classes, more than 40% of our student body participates in one or more sports. In recognition of our families’ financial circumstances, we do not ask student athletes to contribute towards Athletic Program costs. Unlike most high schools, everything is included with tuition. This limits the quality and quantity of athletic equipment, uniforms, and gear available for our students, since we cannot charge these expenses to our families. Cristo Rey needs an equipment makeover from Good Sports to provide nearly 600 students with a quality physical education experience while affording our student athletes the resources they need to represent our school community, and themselves, with pride.
