Social Action Club

Mission

We are making a difference for our school, our community, our society and ourselves. We are gaining knowledge by actively participating in different events in order to educate and spread awareness of important issues to others.

Membership

  • Students need to attend at least one of the two general informational meetings.  One is held at the beginning of the school year and the other is held at the beginning of the second semester.
  • At these informational meeting students will receive an application to be completed and turned in following one week’s time.  The application consists of the following questions:
  • Name, year, asesor/a, workday, schedule, email address
  • Why are you interested in the Social Action Club?
  • How did you hear about the club?
  • What ideas do you for the club?
  • What other commitments or responsibilities do you have or plan to have?
  • Attendance at every weekly meeting is mandatory and meetings will run from 3:45pm – 4:45pm
  • Members are expected to be open to sharing their opinions and thoughts as well as being respectful of the opinions and thoughts of other members.
  • Members are expected to be on time to all meetings.
  • Members are expected to provide advanced notice in the event they cannot attend a meeting.  This notice is to be given to another club member or to the club moderator.
  • Members are expected to participate in the recruitment of new members.
  • Students who are in academic assistance will be permitted to attend meetings, however outside club events is dependent upon students’ academic improvement.

Structure

Every student is a leader and every student is assigned to a committee.  Leadership within the committee is dependent upon student willingness to lead a particular project.

  • Members rotate committees every quarter.
  • The three committees are:  1)  Service;  2)  Awareness;  3)  Education and Opportunites.
  • Within the committees, a project leader’s role is to make sure the committee is on task.  The leader is held accountable by the club moderator and reports to the club moderator.
  • Members of the club will vote for the student council liaison.  (This may rotate depending on responsibilities associated with the position.)

Accomplishments

We had a very good time raising funds for the School of the Americas Trip (WHINSEC Trip). These included:

    • Popcorn sales during lunch
    • Coat checks for the dances
    • Halloween Dress Down Day

Ten students and four faculty embarked on a weekend long pilgrimage as part of the 2nd School of the Americas Trip (WHINSEC Trip) to Ft. Benning in Columbus, Georgia on November 16-20, 2006.  The student and faculty ambassadors participated in a peace rally and march, the Ignatian Solidarity Network Teach-in, and a tour of WHINSEC at Ft. Benning.

Last spring we held a May 1st Immigration Rally in the Cristo Rey plaza which brought together students and faculty to have their voices heard in support of the creation of a more humane immigration policy.
