Bautista Memorial Scholarship (OPEN)
*For Pilsen residents only
The Bautista Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of longtime Pilsen residents and civic leaders, Miguel and Elvira Bautista. In the mid-1940s, after immigrating from Mexico City with nothing, the Bautistas worked to open one of the first Mexican grocery stores in the Pilsen neighborhood, El Esfuerzo. Despite their success, the Bautistas never forgot where they came from – always extending a hand to neighbors in need of food or work. In 1999, the family was honored by the City Council of Chicago, through the posting of honorary street signs at the intersection of 18th and Hoyne.
