CR Hosts 5th Annual Scholarship Breakfast

On November 7, Cristo Rey hosted guests from 13 of our school’s 32 scholarship providers for the fifth annual Scholarship Breakfast. Each year, this event recognizes students for their efforts, beyond Cristo Rey's already high expectations, and the generous people who help them live up to those expectations. This year, approximately one-third of Cristo Rey students will receive more than $800,000 in scholarship awards. Combined with the Corporate Work Study Program, these scholarships allow many of our students to proudly pay the entire cost of their high school education.

Thank you to our friends from the Bautista Memorial Scholarship Fund, Big Shoulders Fund, BMO Bank Latino Alliance, Cuneo Foundation, Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund, HFS Chicago Scholars, Installation Specialists Inc., the Macina family, the May family, Metro Achievement Center, Mr. Richard Moore, the Nemeth family, and Quigley Scholars for joining us and for investing so personally in our students!

Cristo Rey Celebrates Día de los Muertos

By Maria Luevano-Salazar
Spanish Faculty and CR Alum, Class of 2001

With our commitment to promoting our shared Hispanic/Latinx culture and traditions, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School provides our community the opportunity to celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The Cristo Rey students, faculty, and staff enjoy this rich tradition by remembering our deceased loved ones in a variety of ways. To begin, the beautiful ofrenda (altar) - displayed in our school’s lobby - is a great way to bring together our community on this day to remember those who have left our side but are present in our hearts. Our colorful ofrenda, assembled and decorated by members of the Cristo Rey parent club, is full of flowers, photographs, and other items. By displaying these items on the ofrenda, we remember our loved ones with gratitude and celebrate their eternal lives and all that they left us. During religion classes, many of our students are invited to talk about their deceased loved ones and the memories that they have of them. The aim of this activity is to help them see the legacy that these individuals left them. Lastly, during All Saint’s mass, we celebrate those that lived extraordinary lives and are now Saints. In this way, we celebrate life and our calling to aspire to be more like those saints, live extraordinary lives and, leave a great legacy behind us.
